COVINGTON, Ky. (April 9, 2010) – The Department of Defense today honored 18 Northern Kentucky area employers (listed below) with Patriot Awards in recognition of extraordinary support of their employees who serve in the Kentucky National Guard or Reserve. The presentations were made by Kentucky Representative Geoff Davis and Robert Silverthorn, the field chair of the Kentucky Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an agency of the Department of Defense.
Today’s presentation also marked the opening of a Veteran Support Center at Gateway Community and Technical College, which hosted the award presentation at its Edgewood, Ky., campus.
“As an 11-year veteran and former member of the U.S. Army Reserve, I am proud to join business owners in Northern Kentucky who, through their support of employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve, are strengthening the security of the United States during this critical time,” said Congressman Davis. “These businesses were nominated for the Patriot Award by their own military employees. They have been recognized as organizations that excel in supporting the dedicated citizen soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guard men and women whom they employ. I would also like to commend ESGR for the important role it has played for more than 30 years as an essential link between employers and members of the armed forces reserve.”
“The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals and companies that provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve,” said Silverthorn, who, like other members of his committee, is a volunteer. Silverthorn is an attorney in Louisville. “This is a very special occasion at which we are able to honor 18 employers who “go the extra mile” to support their employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve.
“Importantly, these individuals and their companies or organizations were nominated by their Guard and reserve personnel,” Silverthorn said. “Supportive supervisors are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s National Guard and Reserve units.”
As the 1.3 million members of the National Guard and Reserve continue to perform an increasing number of unique missions with America’s borders and beyond, ESGR will continue to be the resource for the employers of citizen warriors. ESGR provides education, consultation, and if necessary mediation for employers of Guard and Reserve employees.
