A chance to see what is happening with ESGR committees everywhere.

The Hiring Our Heroes initiative hosted nearly 100 job fairs across the country in its first year. For year two, the Chamber says it’s boosting that to 400. Ross Cohen is a senior director at the Chamber. He said when the program began last March, veteran unemployment had hit crisis proportions.

When you think about veterans, older and more seasoned soldiers may come to mind. Kathy Wesley served six years in the U.S. Navy and retired to raise her family. The career fair called “Hiring Our Heroes” is the first one she has been to in years.

Bad dreams disrupted his sleep, loud and sudden sounds rattled his nerves and background noise made tasks such as taking a test difficult.  David Jeske, 27, knows firsthand the problems veterans face when seeking civilian jobs. The Auburndale native, who now lives with his wife in Fall Creek, suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after three tours of duty in Iraq with the U.S. Marine Corps.

Sgt. Maj. Andrew McCaughey is getting ready to retire after nearly 24 years of Army service and, for the first time in his life, he was looking for a job.  And nearly 70 employers — private firms and government agencies — were looking for veterans to join their ranks at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's "Hiring Our Heroes" event at Richmond Raceway complex Tuesday.

Former Cornwall resident Ed Tipton has been honored for his work with an Arizona-based company.  Tipton, who moved to Tucson in July, works for Ventana Medical Systems, Inc., which last week received a Patriot Award from the Arizona Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, an agency of the U.S. Department of Defense, according to a Ventana news release. Tipton worked for Ventana out of his Spring Hill Acres home before receiving a promotion last year.

Messina, Jr. recently signed the New Jersey Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserves (NJESGR) Statement of Support in an official gathering at the colleges Pemberton campus, 601 Pemberton Browns Mills Rd. The Statement of Support Program is part of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserves (ESGR) efforts to gain and maintain support for National Guard and Reserve employees. The purpose of the program is to increase employer support for the Guard and Reserve by developing employers that advocate for employee participation in the military.

Lt. Col. David K. Rainey , an electrical and instrumentation technician at the DuPont Sabine River Works site, has nominated DuPont for the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. The award is the highest recognition given by the U.S. government to employers for their outstanding support of employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve. DuPont received the Freedom Award in 2006.
