Tallahassee, Fla. – Today is Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Day in Florida. To highlight this event, the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles joined forces with the Department of Defense Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve to host a series of ceremonies statewide where numerous state law enforcement agencies signed Statements of Support to demonstrate the agencies’ commitment to employees who serve in the National Guard and the Reserve.

/25/2010 - Des Moines, IA -- Deerfield Retirement Community Director Brenda Ballard received a Patriotic Employer Award on April 17th from Iowa Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). Ballard was nominated for the recognition by Alicia Bollie, a Deerfield employee and a Staff Sergeant with the Air National Guard, for the support Ballard and Deerfield provided to her while she was deployed.

NAVAL STATION, NEWPORT, R.I. May 21, 2010. MAESGR sponsored their 4th annual Employer Appreciation Day at the Naval Station (NAVSTA) in Newport, R.I. today. The Navy pulled out all of the stops to ensure the 21 employers and 5 MAESGR Members had a great time. The morning began in Fall River. MA where the group assembled and then transported to the base via bus. The bus was met at the gate and commenced a professionally escorted tour by Ms. Lisa Rama of the Public Affairs office at NAVSTA.

In advance of the holiday that recognizes the men and women who gave their lives defending America, the Metropolitan King County Council today celebrated Memorial Day with a proclamation pledging its support for county employees serving in the National Guard and Reserve. The proclamation was sponsored by Council Chair Bob Ferguson, who sponsored the 2005 King County Veterans and Human Services Levy, and Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer, the only veteran on the Council.

A free Lunch and Learn session for Quad-City employers, hosted by the Iowa Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, or ESGR, will be 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Thursday at the Rogalski Center, St. Ambrose University, Davenport. It is open to all employers, especially those with employees currently in the military.

The state committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an agency of the Department of Defense, bestowed the patriot award to Ed Sullins, Maryville Hy-Vee meat department manager, in recognition of his company’s extraordinary support of Sgt. Brandon Thurman, an employee who serves in the Iowa National Guard, Bravo Company 1/168 Infantry located in Shenandoah, IA. Sullins and Thurman are joined in the photo by Jerry Jensen, a volunteer with the ESGR. Sullins, who is known to be sympathetic to both active service personnel as well as veterans, was nominated for the distinction by Thurman, who noted that Sullins has always been supportive of his time away from the job for National Guard needs. Thurman, a 14-year serviceman, is to be deployed for a year in Afghanistan soon. He has served in Iraq, Kuwait and Kosovo in the past.

Every year Service Members from the National Guard and Reserve nominate their civilian employers for recognition from Vermont Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) for going above and beyond the legal requirements in supporting them while on military duty. On June 1st Vermont ESGR will hold its annual Awards Banquet at the Capitol Plaza in Montpelier and recognize top employers throughout the state for their support of their employees in the National Guard and Reserve.

Intuit of Mountain View, Bill Bragg Plumbing of San Francisco and the Irvine Police Department have been selected as three of 30 national finalists for the 2010 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. The award is the U.S. Government’s highest recognition given to employers for exceptional support of their employees serving in the Guard and Reserve. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the award which was instituted in 1996 under then Secretary of Defense William Perry. Intuit, nominated by a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Reserve from Burlingame, California; Bill Brag Plumbing, nominated by a Petty Officer First Class in the U.S Navy Reserve from San Francisco, California; and the Irvine Police Department, nominated by a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve from Irvine, California, were selected from more than 2,500 nominations submitted for the award. Thousands of U.S. employers were nominated for outstanding support of Guard and Reserve employees, which included providing full salary, continuation of benefits, care packages and even family support to employees fulfilling their military obligation.
