SIOUX CITY, Iowa — What better place to share important information with employers from three states, all at one time, than Sioux City, Iowa?

Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve carefully chose that location for an early-spring presentation co-sponsored by the Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota state ESGR committees. Sioux City, where all three states meet, was the site of a joint Lunch and Learn presentation attended by 60 employers, supervisors and human resources professionals.

The audience enjoyed lunch and received important briefings concerning the rights and responsibilities of both National Guard and Reserve members and their civilian employers. Staff and committee members from all three state ESGR organizations participated in the presentation.

Department of Labor staff explained federal law and how it protects service members’ civilian jobs, especially when deployed for long-term duty. Employer rights were discussed as well.

Those in attendance for the two-hour event took with them better understanding of the requirements on both the civilian and military sides of the equation.

Bill Nelson, executive director of Nebraska’s ESGR Committee said, “This is the first time we know of where three states shared information and resources to sponsor an important employer event.”

ESGR volunteers provide free education, consultation and if necessary mediation for employers of Guard and Reserve personnel.
