NORFOLK, Neb. — Bill Ohlmeyer is long gone from his Norfolk workplace these days, training elsewhere for a June deployment in his second job as a member of the Nebraska military reserve components. Ohlmeyer, however, left one thing behind with his civilian employer and fellow staff at Behavior Health Specialists in Norfolk … a Nebraska Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Patriot Award. The Patriot Award, delivered and presented by ESGR volunteer Jim Deuel, provides an avenue for National Guard or Reserve personnel to recognize and thank their civilian bosses and co-workers for standing behind the soldier and his or her family during absences for training or overseas deployment. In Ohlmeyer’s case it is both. Connie Barnes, executive director of BHS, and Ohlmeyer’s fellow employees enjoyed a cake on the day of the presentation, decorated with a frosting message that declared their pride in his military service. Barnes also signed an ESGR Statement of Support, declaring the commitment of BHS to stand behind all those who have voluntarily accepted dual-duty careers in both the civilian and military worlds. ESGR volunteers provide free education, consultation and if necessary mediation for employers of Guard and Reserve personnel.
