Vennice, FL -- Over thirty people were on hand 16 January in Venice, Florida, to recognize three local employers who provide outstanding support to their dual career citizen soldiers. Sarasota County Commission Chair Joe Barbetta presented ESGR’s Patriot Awards to Jim Pero Venice Postmaster, Dr. Ken Pfahler of the Cardiology Center of Englewood, and Lt. Bill Tracy with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s office.
“These nominating employees have experienced multiple deployments. It’s challenging to loose a key employee,” said Mary Lou McFate, a member of the Manatee & Sarasota County Florida ESGR Committee, “Yet these three employers are part of the team critical to our national security. Thank you for allowing your Reservists to fulfill their military responsibilities. Your support is key!”
In accepting his award, Dr. Ken Pfahler said, “I did not have the opportunity to serve in uniform. I want to support Mark.” MSgt Mark Brooks is an EMT in Dr. Pfahler’s practice, and a member of the USAFR, serving with the 927th ASTS at McDill AFB in Tampa.
The event held in the Sarasota County Administration Building in Venice, Florida, was attended by over 30 people. Newspapers covered the event and the ceremony in the Commissioners’ chambers was broadcast live on local television.
Sarasota County was also recognized by Ms. McFate for signing the Statement of Support certificate. “The County should set the example for its citizens,” said Commissioner Jon Thaxton, “We support the military service of our employers.”
Prior to the 9 AM televised ceremony, families, friends, and county employees enjoyed an on-site breakfast, with time to congratulate both the honored employers and their employees. ESGR outreach materials were displayed on a table, with ample available handouts. “I love your clever ads (PSAs) on TV,” said a passerby who came to the table for a closer look at the ESGR banner flag.
“These are the kind of employees I want,” declared one of the employers, “They’re trained to take orders, be responsible, and work as a team. They’re drug free, don’t watch the clock, and they always have a good hair cut!”
“In addition to occupational specialty training, today’s Guard & Reservists receive leadership training that benefits them in their professional and personal lives,” said Mary Lou McFate, “Hiring Guard & Reservists makes sense.”
