Saint Paul, MN– The Minnesota Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an agency of the Department of Defense, announced today Ruth Vegdahl, supervisor with the Minnesota Department of Revenue Sales and Use Tax Division, was honored with a Patriot Award in recognition of her extraordinary support of employee and SGT Chris Determan who recently returned from a one year deployment in Iraq with the Minnesota Army National Guard.

According to Jim Sullivan, ESGR Minnesota Executive Director, “The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve.  When nominating his supervisor, SGT Determan praised Vegdahl for her support to include:  time off prior to his deployment; differential pay; numerous care packages and letters from co-workers; and the assurance that his job would be there when he returned home.  Supportive supervisors are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s National Guard and Reserve units.”

Revenue Commissioner Ward Einess was present for the ceremony along with over one hundred employees of the MN Department of Revenue.  He emphasized the importance of providing full support to all employees that serve in the Guard and Reserve.

The Minnesota Department of Revenue manages the state’s revenue system. They administer 28 different taxes, collecting over $12 billion annually. This money funds education, local government aid, property tax relief, social service programs, highways, and other state programs and operations.

As the 1.3 million members of the National Guard and Reserve continue to perform an increasing number of unique missions with America’s borders and beyond, ESGR will continue to be the resource for the employers of citizen warriors. ESGR recognizes outstanding support, increases awareness of the law, and resolves conflict through mediation.  More information about ESGR Employer Outreach Programs and volunteer opportunities is available at www.esgr.mil, or by calling 651-282-4285.
